Russia to call for end to human rights monitoring in Chechnya at PACE in April

24 January 2002

STRASBOURG. Jan 24 (Interfax) - At the next session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in April, Russia plans to raise the question of stopping Council of Europe monitoring of human rights in Chechnya, deputy head of the delegation Leonid Slutsky told Interfax in Strasbourg.

He said the purpose of the monitoring was to check that Russia is keeping to its commitments undertaken in 1996 when it joined the Council of Europe.

In Slutsky's opinion, it is high time to stop "checking us, the monitoring of Russia has lasted for over five years now and Chechnya remains the last inspected subject." He said the convention on language minorities as well as many other commitments has been fulfilled and Russia will also cope with the problem of Chechnya.
