19 May 2001
GROZNY, Russia - 10 Russian armored personnel carriers surrounded the university in the Chechen capital Grozny on Friday and prevented students and faculty from leaving. Anxious relatives of people stuck inside gathered outside the university gates.
A medical student who identified herself only by her first name, Larisa, said that seven students had been arrested as Russian soldiers checked people's identity documents and bags. She said she was allowed to leave the university only because she began to feel sick.
